Newcastle Grammar School will celebrate its Annual Speech Day and the outstanding achievements of its students in a gala presentation being held at the Civic Theatre on Monday 5th December 2016 at 6pm.
Students, parents and staff will also have the pleasure of hearing from this year’s keynote speaker, Mr George Palmer AM QC. A former Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW, Mr Palmer is now one of the Australia’s best known music composers.
Composing music since his youth, it wasn’t until after his highly successful law career and the failing health of his father, that prompted Palmer to officially record some of his compositions. These compositions would go on to be discovered by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and receive critical acclaim from industry peers and listeners. Months later he was featured on Australian Story.
In July 2007, Palmer was commissioned to write the Papal Mass for World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney and more recently composed the score for Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet, which was labelled “a resounding triumph”.
In 2010, Mr George Palmer was made a Member of the Order of Australia “for service to the law as a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and to music as a composer and through leadership roles with a range of cultural bodies.”
Head of School, Mrs Erica Thomas said they are delighted to have such an outstanding role model and someone of such high calibre to inspire their students this year.
“It is so befitting that this year our end of year celebrations be held at the Civic Theatre. Mr George Palmer is one of Australia’s most outstanding composers and law professionals and we are honoured that he is able to join us,” Mrs Thomas said.
“Newcastle Grammar School has had an outstanding year of academic, sporting and cultural accomplishments and as Head of School, I couldn’t be more proud of our student’s achievements.”
