Novocastrian song writer and indie-pop singer, Kristy Coote has been named amongst a prestigious list of Aussie artists who have been recognised in the 2016/2017 International Songwriting Competition (ISC). Kristy’s song ‘Pretending’ received an Honourable Mention in the US based music competition.
Now in its 16th year, ISC is the world’s largest international songwriting competition, receiving more than 16,000 entries from 137 countries throughout the world. With winners announced a couple of days ago, it is clear that Australian songwriters have performed exceptional well in the competition, winning a record ten first, second and third places from 70 awards and an additional 50 honourable mentions.
Ms Coote is ecstatic with the acknowledgement as the song was extremely personal to her. It also highlights the beginning of more exciting things to come as she is currently working on a number of new projects.
Kristy co-wrote the song ‘Pretending’ with 90’s pop star Clive Young after a two-day writing session in Melbourne. They had been working on another song for one and a half days, when with only two hours remaining to their session, the song was penned and performed.
“The inspiration behind the song were my two beautiful nieces Maddy and Bronte (now 16 and 13) who are also Newcastle girls. However, when I wrote the song in 2014, they were at an age where they were so vulnerable. I was just so worried about them in this big bad world and just wanted to keep them wrapped up in cotton wool to protect them”. Kristy explains.
Australia is again the country with the most winners next to the USA, with a total of 60 songs. Well-known Australian artist Kate Miller-Heidke was one of the artists to receive first place in the competition.
“Celebrating the talent of so many Australian songwriters reminds the world how important Australia is to the global music landscape. There is so much incredible talent, and it is always a pleasure to discover up-and-coming Aussie artists as well as getting to revisit more seasoned ones”- Candace Avery, Founder and Director of ISC .
